PUNE, June 3: The University of Pune has decided against centralisation of admissions to first year arts, commerce and science degree courses for the academic year 1998-99. HSC students from junior colleges can now rest assured of obtaining admission to their senior colleges.A two-member committee of Dr. G R Ekbote and Principal Bhausaheb Jadhav was appointed by the Academic Council to prepare a list of rules for admission to the first year degree courses barring BCS. Confusion had prevailed last year with the State Government favouring centralised admissions.
While the Maharashtra Universities Act '94 stipulates that rules should be laid down six months prior to the time of admission, the varsity had not done so. The two member committee however has decided that the HSC students from the junior colleges would be given preference to their own senior colleges.
However if the junior college had no senior college attached to it, admissions would be made on the basis of reservation and merit, Ekbote said. With HSC results scheduled to be declared on June 9, colleges are gearing up for the admission process. In case of vacant seats, the university will establish an University admission cell.
Fergusson College principal V K Wagh said that there would be a tremendous rush for admission to the Arts stream. This trend has been evident for the last two years and it becomes a problem to accommodate students. He however bemoaned the lack of students for the science stream. With the increase in the number of engineering seats by over a thousand, it will be virtually impossible for several colleges to fill up the science seats, he rued.
