Maharashtra by-polls peaceful; firing, rigging in Bihar
Polling for three Lok Sabha and 51 Assembly constituencies spread over 13 states yesterday was generally peaceful and recorded dull to heavy turnout. In Maharashtra, an estimated 50 to 55% of 18.39 lakh electorate exercised their franchise in the by-election to ten seats of the Legislative Assembly.
A Gandhian plea by Clinton
President Clinton went "Gandhian" momentarily to again condemn the nuclear tests by India and Pakistan and said the developments in the region will "make their people poorer and less secure." Describing the manufacture of nuclear weapons as "self-defeating, wasteful and dangerous", Clinton said the nuclear tests ran "contrary to the ideals of non-violent democratic freedom and independence at the heart of Gandhi's struggle to end colonialism on the Indian subcontinent."
I-cards for 14 yrs and above: Advani
Home Minister L K Advani told the Rajya Sabha that the Government proposes to issue multipurpose national identity cards to all citizens of 14 years and above. The multipurpose cards were proposed to be used for the purpose of issuing passports, driving licences, ration cards, health care, admission in educational institutions, employment in public/private sectors, life and general insurance as also for maintenance of land records and urban property holdings.
