BONN, June 5: Germany's national railway operator on Thursday withdrew from service all high-speed trains of the type that crashed in northern Germany killing at least 94 people. All 60 first generation Intercity Express (ICE) trains have been withdrawn, the spokesman for the German Bundesbahn told AFP the day after the crash. The trains will ``stay in the workshops for as long as is needed so that the necessary safeguards can be applied,'' he said.
A total of 103 ICE trains are operated in Germany. The withdrawal of the first generation trains will cause major disruption to inter-city travel in the country, the spokesman admitted. The company said that the decision was made ``because of the first signs on the possible causes of the accident.''
