Corretja crushes French resistance

REUTERS
Paris, June 5: Spain's Alex Corretja joined compatriot Carlos Moya in the French Open tennis final with a crushing straight-sets victory over home favourite Cedric Pioline today.

Fourteenth seed Corretja blitzed the unseeded Frenchman 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours 21 minutes on a scorching Roland Garros Court Central.

Moya, seeded 12th, had earlier booked his place with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over friend and fellow Spaniard Felix Mantilla.

Not even the fervent support of the 16,000 crowd could lift Pioline, Wimbledon finalist last year, as the 30 degree celsius temperatures evaporated the last drops of French resistance.

The pair exchanged breaks early in the match but after Pioline had broken serve to level at 3-3, Corretja reeled off the next three games including two breaks to take the set and silence the crowd.

Pioline failed to convert break points in the fifth and ninth games of the second set and was made to pay dearly when a double fault at 5-4 down handed the second set to theSpaniard.

The French world No 17 visibly wilted and blew another three break points in the opening game of the third set as Corretja took a 3-0 lead before Pioline could hold.

A further break saw Corretja put the Frenchman out of his misery 6-2 in the third on his first matchpoint.

Moya, conqueror of tournament favourite Marcelo Rios inthe quarter-finals, needed two hours 42 minutes to overcome his practice partner 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

Mantilla, seeded 15, drew first blood by taking the opening set with some superb baseline tennis in this their eighth clash.

But Moya levelled by racing through the second. Mantilla again stepped up the pace and led 4-2 in the third in this see-saw battle but then could only watch in horror as Moya won the next four games in a row to take a 2-1 lead in sets.

Having the set snatched from under his nose like that appeared to rock Mantilla and the player who had spent Thursday evening eating ice-cream on the Champs Elysees with Moya and Corretja began to wilt.

``I amgoing to ask Felix to come to the Champs Elysees again tonight but if he is angry I will understand,'' Moya said.

He did not say whether Corretja would be invited too.
