CHENNAI, June 9: Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member, Sitaram Yechury on Monday alleged the Vajpayee Government had resorted to the nuclear tests as it was being cornered by a `women's triangle' comprising AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha, Trinamul Congress president Mamata Banerjee and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.Delivering the ninth V P Chintan memorial lecture on the topic ``The BJP led Government -- Prospects and Implications'' in Chennai, he termed the nuclear explosions as an attempt to divert the attention of the people by creating a false sense of euphoria. This was a move to ``hijack the genuine patriotism of the people by whipping up jingoism'', Yechury observed.
Stating that the implications of the BJP governance would be grave, he said the tests had prepared the grounds for an arms race. Following the Pokharan explosions, India was under pressure to sign two the treaties -- CTBT and NPT which would legalise the monopoly of the nuclear powers. The BJP Government islikely to betray the country and sign the treaties citing economic compulsions, he warned.
The Kashmir issue had been internationalised due to the Home Minister's recent utterances linking the troubled state with the need to undertake the tests, he said. The tests had `spoiled' the good neighbourly relations developed in the last few years.
A situation where thousand of rupees meant for social uplift schemes would have to be diverted towards expenditure for defence preparedness had been created, he charged. India had become more vulnerable to security threats due to the domestic partisan interest of the BJP, he added. Terming the BJP's maiden budget as a ``pseudo-swadeshi budget'', he criticised the opening up of the insurance sector to the domestic private sector, stating that it would pave the way for the foreign companies to indirectly enter the sector. The BJP's stress on switching over to a Presidential form of Government was only to create a environment to perpetuate Ram Rajya, he said. Jayaproperties: Chennai-BJP State unit leader L Ganesan said on Monday that the AIADMK's high-pitched demand for the dismissal of the Karunanidhi government has been provoked by the `totally unneccessary move' to attach the properties of the AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha.
In a statement issued five days after the Special Court ordered the interim attachment of Jayalalitha (later the High Court stayed the Special Corut order), Ganesan has said that the distraint proceedings could have been avoided. He went on to allege that the DMK regime's intention was to slur the image of Jayalalitha, after the massive electoral victory the AIADMK Front posted in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
