India needs original strategies: Governor
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NASHIK, June 10: Government intervention is necessary to keep the Indian economy on the right track, said Maharashtra Governor P C Alexander, justifying the Central policy of retaining control over industries. ``Everything cannot be left to the laws of the market,'' the Governor said, while addressing the concluding function of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Nashik branch of the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce and Industry.India's problems -- like poverty -- could not be solved by trying out the strategies adopted by other countries, he said, adding that solutions should be developed by keeping the situations particular to the country in mind. Besides, India couldn't look for a role model to follow, the Governor said. Earlier, though South-East Asian countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and South Korea, were projected as role models for the country, these nations were now going through an economic crisis. Even the 100 billion dollars aid provided by the IMF proved to be insufficient, theGovernor said. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
