Chinese women raped during riots: Report

WASHINGTON, June 10: Hundreds of ethnic Chinese women aged between 10 and 55 were victims of an organised campaign of assaults, gang rapes, and killings during the Jakarta riots last month, The New York Times said on Wednesday.

Human rights and women's aid groups have begun to document the May 13-15 assaults in the Indonesian capital during which more than 100 women and girls were attacked, the daily said. One worker at a women's aid centre said there were hundreds of women receiving physical or psychological help at Jakarta hospitals. Most women were too traumatised and fearing reprisals refuse to talk about their ordeals, other workers said. Another worker said some of those attacked had committed suicide. The attacks ranged from degrading to horrific, the daily said. Some women were made to strip and perform calisthenics, while others were repeatedly raped and then thrown into burning buildings. Human rights workers said the attacks were mostly organised by unknown groups.
