Power shortage quite serious

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, June 10: Union Power Minister P.R. Kumaramangalam today admitted that the power shortage in the Capital was quite serious, blaming it on the ageing transmission and distribution system and power theft by industrial users.

Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Kumaramangalam said that a sizable amount of power was lost during transmission but added that a lot of investment was required to change the ageing transmission lines and distribution network. Over 30 per cent of the total power generation was gobbled up by power thieves, mainly industrial users, who stole directly from underground cables, he added.
