NEW DELHI, June 10: A Delhi court has ordered the director of social welfare to continue to run the mess of the hostel for college-going blind students in Kingsway Camp till June 22. Earlier the social welfare department had closed the mess for the summer vacations.Counsel for the plaintiffs J.N. Singh pointed out that some of the students would complete their academic session only by June 22. He argued that the social welfare department was trying to forcibly evict them from the hostel. He said that the students were blind and unable to get any assistance from other sources.
He submitted that the mess be immediately opened and food be supplied to the students. On behalf of the defendant, A.K. Sinha said that according to the rules, the hostel was supposed to be closed after the last examinations were over.
In his order, additional district judge, I.S. Mehta said that A.K. Sinha was unable to convince the court that the academic session of the students was over. He noted that Sinha had submitted that some of the post graduate students who were appearing in the exam would be given Rs 25 per day.
Counsel J.N. Singh pointed out that that no payment had been made to the students and that the sum of Rs 25 a day was insufficient to sustain the students. The judge agreed with this and said that it was better to keep the mess running till June 22.
He further directed both the parties appear before the vacation judge, Delhi on June 23.
