Brazil escape to victory
Scottish defender Tommy Boyd knocked a rebound past his own goalkeeper in the 73rd minute to give defending champion Brazil a 2-1 victory to open the 16th World Cup soccer yesterday. Cafu fought off Gordon Durie in the penalty area to beat him to a long ball from Dunga and touched it into goalkeeper Jim Leighton with the outside of his left foot.

Chris Cairns scalps four
New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns took four for 58 to put the Kiwis in a commanding position against Sri Lanka on the first day of the third and final Test.

Ravanelli out of World Cup
Striker Fabrizio Ravanelli has bronchial pneumonia and is out of the World Cup finals, an Italian team official confirmed today. Ravanelli will fly home on Thursday and will be replaced by Parma forward Enrico Chiesa, who is already in France with Cesare Maldini's 22-man party.
