BJP gets even with Sena on surplus votes

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, June 13: The cold war between the Shiv Sena and BJP has taken a new turn following Deputy CM Gopinath Munde's statement today that a decision on BJP's surplus votes for the Rajya Sabha polls will be taken on June 17. Since BJP has only fielded Pramod Mahajan, it has more than 20 surplus votes and had earlier agreed to allot them to a Sena candidate.

The genesis of the BJP volte face lies in the run-up to Legislative Council polls for which the party expected the Sena to field two candidates and allot the rest to BJP which has nominated three members. However, much to the displeasure of the BJP, Shiv Sena too nominated three candidates.

A senior Sena leader said the strength of the alliance is around 164 . On the basis of this arithmetic, a clear victory for five candidates is guaranteed and so BJP should not fielded the third candidate, he added.
