RSP rebuffs BJP's anti-Left overtures

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CALCUTTA, June 13: The Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) today rebuffed overtures from the BJP and the Trinamool Congress to help the party fight the CPI(M) ``terror''. A five-member BJP MPs' team today visited Basanti in South 24 Parganas district where four RSP supporters were killed by CPI(M) activists recently. Senior RSP leader Sunil Sengupta told The Indian Express that his party did not need the protection of the BJP or the TC. ``We can fight our own battle. Our party has not yet come to such a pass that we'll seek the BJP's support,'' Sengupta remarked. He said that the local people were free to air their grievances to a parliamentary team, but RSP leaders would have nothing to do with the team. The BJP team, comprising former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Shanta Kumar, K R Malkani, Sumitra Mahajan, T N Chaturvedi, and Captain Khandouri, will tour Basanti and some other areas in South 24 Parganas which had seen killings and arson during last month's panchayat elections. The team arrivedhere this morning.

Before leaving for Basanti, Chaturvedi said the RSP had shown keenness to talk to the team. Not only activists of the opposition parties, but also members of the CPI(M)'s partners in the Left Front were being killed by the Marxists, he alleged.

The team will visit some other areas in Hooghly and Midnapore districts tomorrow. On its return to New Delhi, it will submit a report to the BJP central leadership. No TC leader however accompanied the team. TC MP, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, said his party was happy that the BJP had sent the team. ``But it is their team,'' he added.
