MARSEILLE (FRANCE), June 13: With three goals and repeated attacks, France produced the result the whole host nation had been hoping for and crushed South Africa 3-0 to stake its claim as a World Cup favourite.Olympique Marseille's hero Christophe Dugarry scored one goal and assisted on another and prodigy Thierry Henry weaved through the South African defense in injury time with a darting run and a gentle, cunning finish, to top off a dominating performance last night.
Marseille's native son Zinedine Zidane led the French forward throughout the match, and together with his best friend Dugarry, paced France past an all-important first test.
``The door is wide open now,'' French coach Aime Jacquet said. ``We are really confident.''
France moved atop Group C after one round, moving past Denmark, which beat Saudi Arabia 1-0, on goal difference.
Wave after wave of attacks finally paid off in the 34th minute when a corner from Zidane found Dugarry unmarked in the goalmouth and the substitute for injuredstriker Stephane Guivarc'H headed home off the post to set the crowd of 60,000 alight.
In the 78th minute, continuous pressure paid off again, with Dugarry finding Youri Djorkaeff free in the penalty area and the forward's shot on goal was deflected by South Africa's Pierre Issa into his own net. Henry, just 20, then made it a perfect night for France, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Hans Vonk for his first goal for France.
