Gujarat cyclone toll mounts to 1,040

GANDHINAGAR, JUNE 14: The toll in the devastating cyclonic storm that hit coastal Gujarat on Tuesday has gone up to 1,040 with recovery of some more bodies from Kandla creek in Kutch district today.Kandla-Kutch area accounted for the highest number of deaths (794) followed by Jamnagar (154), Rajkot (46), Porbandar (23), Junagadh (6), Banaskantha and Valsad (4 each), Surat (3), Broach and Navsari (2 each) and Amreli and Bhavnagar (one each). Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel today said his government would probe cases of missing persons. Patel, who reviewed the situation at a meeting here, instructed officials to make immediate payment of Rs one lakh to the victims. Of the amount, Rs 50,000 would be given from the government fund and the remaining amount from the Prime Minister's relief fund, he said. Patel requested chief ministers of Maharashtra and Rajasthan to provide electric poles as 88,000 poles had been damaged in the cyclone resulting in disruption of power supply. A team of experts form the CentralHealth Ministry will visit the affected areas of Kutch to study steps to prevent outbreak of epidemics. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
