ESIC staff threaten stir

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
June 14: Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) employees in Mumbai and Thane will launch a work-to-rule agitation between June 15 and July 14. The agitation is to protest the harsh working conditions in local ESIC offices and to demand the filling of all vacancies in various cadres.

M S Inamdar, general secretary, Mumbai region, said despite an increase in the number of employees and insured persons as a result of an amendment to the ESIC Act in January 1997, the staff is still based on figures worked out during the period of 1994-95.

He also stated that authorities had failed to fill up vacancies in the last three years, increasing workload. The offices are mostly located in rented premises with no water connections, toilet and other facilities.
