NEW DELHI, June 14: The three-month-old Atal Behari Vajpayee Government, which has of late come under attack from its allies and opposition parties alike, earned a reprieve of sorts with the Trinamool Congress reiterating its full and unconditional support to it.TC chief Mamata Banerjee, who had over a week back suspended her party's support to the BJP-led Government in the aftermath of panchayat elections in West Bengala decision which was revoked some days later in fact, went a step ahead. She lauded the Vajpayee Government as being ``an assertive Government which had delivered its goods.''
She, however, sounded a note of caution by asking the ruling coalition to step up its vigil in Ayodhya so that no structure even in the adjoining areas of the disputed site could come up.
In an interview to a private TV channel, the firebrand leader observed that Ayodhya was a very sensitive issue and there were allegations that some efforts were being made to build `a temple or something' outside the disputedsite. She appealed to the Government to look after the interests of the minority and refrain from doing anything that could send a bad message to them. ``We have to look after them, our brothers and sisters,'' she quipped.
Extending her party's full support to the Vajpayee Government, the leader said the country needed a stable government and her party would vote for the budget despite having reservations on issues like privatisation of insurance sector, disinvestment in public sector industries and closure of such undertakings. ``We will support this Government,'' she said, ``We will vote for the budget, but our reservation is there and I think the Finance Minister should do something about these issues,'' she added. She also called for convening an all-party meeting or setting up a parliamentary committee to create uniform economic policy. On her party's disagreement with the Government over the recently concluded panchayat elections in West Bengal that led to the boycott of Parliament by her party MPs,the firebrand leader said she had asked the Prime Minister to exercise his power under the Constitution and intervene in the interests of women, minorities and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to make their lives secure. She also asked for the rehabilitation of families of 95 people killed during the elections.
Regarding her demand for the dismissal of the West Bengal government, Banerjee said she had not asked for anything that could embarrass the Vajpayee Government. ``I want that the Left Front Government should go on its own. Let them face an election, they will go,'' she said.
She said she was not unhappy with the performance of the alliance government and her party had no intention of toppling it. ``This is a very assertive government. In the last three months, they have delivered their goods,'' she pointed out.
