NEW DELHI, June 14: The Students' Union of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has threatened to launch an agitation in protest against the institute's decision to ``hike tuition fees by 1,000 per cent'' for the next academic session. The union issued a statement today, saying that the Academic Committee of the Institute could not hike the fees last year because of opposition from the students.
``This year, however, they quietly passed these proposals without informing the students. We came to know of this only only last week when the proposal was being implemented,'' said Hemant Goyal, president of the union.
The union added that the present proposal for the 1,000 per cent fee hike was not new. ``We are determined to oppose it again by taking the path of agitation to preserve the character of this premier institute.''
The students fear that the hike at AIIMS might trigger off a chain reaction in other medical colleges.
