Congress activists protest `silently'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, June 14: Over 1,000 Congress activists held a silent demonstration at Raj Ghat today protesting against the worsening situation of civic amenities in Delhi due to misgoverning by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The demonstration was led by the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee Sheila Dikshit along with other prominent leaders of the party.

Meant to be a mauna dhrana(silent sit in), the three-hour long affair, passed of peacefully and `silently'. Later, addressing protesting partymen, DPCC chief Dikshit pointed out that she does not believe in talking and criticising ``only for the sake of criticism'' and believes in placing solid facts before the people.

Reminding the gathering about the silent agitation of Mahatma Gandhi, she said, ``Congress president Sonia Gandhi has exhorted all the Congressmen to oppose in a constructive manner, which is why we are doing this today.''

Dikshit informed that the BJP Government in Delhi had made 137 promises for the people in its 1993 manifesto for Assembly elections. ``But unfortunately, during its tenure it has not even fulfilled 37 of these promises,'' she said

Listing out the promises that were not fulfilled, she said that while the pledge was to make Delhi the most beautiful city of the world, the BJP Government has only succeeded in making it one of the dirtiest cities with no civic amenities for the people.

She also flayed the Government for not regularising a single unauthorised colony out of the 1,500 existing ones. ``The Delhi Chief Minister who boasts of agrarian background has done nothing to even provide proper drainage system for sewage,'' she said.

She announced the launch of People Emancipation Movement to highlight the failures of the BJP Government in Delhi.
