NEW DELHI, June 14: Principals of several prominent public schools of the capital have demanded that the class XII English language paper of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) be re-evaluated. In a letter to CBSE chairman Dr B.P. Khandelwal, the principals have expressed surprise over the low scores in English by students, who they said have done very well in other subjects.Pointing out that the same students had also secured high marks in their class Xth examinations in English and they include even merit holders, the principals said it was their firm belief that a `major mishap' has taken place somewhere which has completely ruined the English results and a reassessment of the papers was called for.
The letter from the principals of Don Bosco, Mater Die, St Columbas, Jesus and Mary, Fr Agnel and Presentation Convent comes in the wake of CBSE's reported rejection of the demand for re-evaluation. The principals contended that either the papers were corrected by examiners who have scant knowledge of English or a bias against the students of public schools. They also felt that perhaps the marks had been swapped. Delhi Education and Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has urged Khandelwal to consider the demand of students for the revaluation of class XII answer sheets sympathetically. In a democratic set-up, he said that the students demand for revaluation should be acceded to and the Board should also allow students to see the answer sheets.
Denying a mix-up of any kind, K.D. Sharma, Controller of Examinations, CBSE said that their system was foolproof. He also said that as per the rule, revaluation would be done in all those cases where students had applied for it.
