Congress has "independent" power
The activities of Independent MLAs, who have always held the balance of power in Maharashtra, appear to be reaching a flashpoint with the Sena-BJP alliance standing in danger of losing their support in the coming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha. While these Independents are courting their one time bete noire - former Chief Minister Sharad Pawar - in the hope that he will help secure their future as for the Sena-BJP government, there appears little danger at this moment despite talks of a no-confidence motion during the monsoon session in July.

Patel inducts 6, upsets a host of JD men
Karnataka Chief Minister J H Patel has inducted six ministers into his Council of Ministers on Sunday, triggering widespread discontent within the party. Of the new ministers, Basavaraj Patil Attur and A B Patil have been given Cabinet rank, while H Shivappa, M C Managuli, Nagappa Saloni and Jayanth Subbaraya have been inducted as Ministers of State.

Mamata pats Atal's Govt
The three-month-old Atal Behari Vajpayee government, which has of late come under attack from its allies and opposition parties alike, earned a reprieve of sorts with the Trinamool Congress reiterating its full and unconditional support to it. She lauded the Vajpayee government as being "an assertive Government which had delivered its goods."
