Out & About

Virtual read

Need your browsing fix but cannot make it to the bookstore? Well, thanks to the internet, browsing can take on a whole new meaning. Log in to www.indiabookshop.com and you have a window to a growing database of 10,000 titles -- all that can be purchased over the net. A virtual shopping cart allows visitors at the end of the ride to automatically calculate their purchases. Still not impressed? Within Mumbai, IBS offers free delivery -- at that time you pay the bearer of your book. And for other destinations -- Calcutta, Chennai, New Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad -- standard VPP rates apply. Other advantages: This bookstore is open 24 hours, a 10 per cent discount is being offered on all the books and two per cent of all purchases are donated toward the health and education of underprivileged children charity right from home!

Created by Annet Communications, the CEO Rohan Bulchandani, also offers multimedia, video FX, virtual simulations, touch screen kiosks and web sites. He can becontacted at: www.annetsite.com.

To the T

Shoppers' Stop never seems to let up. Now, this mega mall introduces the T-shirt bra. An Underlines product, it comes in shades of pink, ivory and skin. India's first lingerie chain, the sizing of these bras is fairly all-encompassing -- 32 to 36 (A, B & C cups). Priced at Rs 600 a good thing about this style is that it has no unsightly seams that stand out through your top or bodysuit. Worldwide, the T-shirt bra has become a must-wear under tight dresses and fitted garments. So buy a T-shirt bra and pick up a tight T-shirt to go over it -- bra lines are now a thing of the past.

Guy's gold

Narcissus rears his head again -- this time aided and abetted by Inter Gold. The jewellery company has introduced a range of men's accessories -- studded and non-studded items, in 18 K gold. Cuff links, tie pins, tie clips, rings, pendants, mobile rings and money clips can now be bought in subtle designs and dull gold. For the even more fashion conscious, sherwani buttons, kurta buttons, bracelets and initials for pens are also available. Not good enough for you? Then thematic jewellery like Golf and Cricket cuff links and buttons are your cup of tea. No wonder, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was called for the inauguration. Inter Gold is hoping to cash in on the Father's Day craze and has priced its gold goodies between Rs 800 and Rs 70,000. See which range you fit into when you drop into their exclusive store at Hughes Road.

Hearing aids

Senso, an advanced digital hearing aid manufactured by Widex of Denmark, is now available in Mumbai. It is the world's first fully digital in-the-ear hearing aid which employs a computer chip, roughly the power of a pentium computer. The chip samples the ambient sound one million times per second, does 40 million calculations per second and constantly keeps adjusting the sound volume and tonality to match the patient's audiological needs. And despite its extreme complexity, the use of this state-of-the-art digitaltechnology gives SENSO a battery life of 165 hours. The hearing aids are available at a price of Rs 50,000. For more details contact Calipsonic (624 4461), Enmas (648 3445/ 604 5831) or Navjeevan Hearing Aid centre (309 1260/1073).

Rina's reign

Rinaldi's special week at the Oak Tree (behind the Taj) will be over this weekend. For those of you who need your Rina Shah-fix, note this deadline and get there. Bags of lace, net and animal prints decorated with satin flowers and tassels, shoes with thick cork soles and plastic butterflies and embroideredsandals can all be found. Get there fast, as the next range will concentrate on the rains and we suspect there might be still more rexine for Rina.

Spot Light

From the outside, you might mistake it for just another South Mumbai restaurant -- but for the entire schedule of the ongoing soccer World Cup pasted on the door. Before that, a life-size cut out of South African speedster Allan Donald, adorned the entrance of Lovji and Aspan Cooper's Patuck restaurant or Sports Cafe at Flora Fountain -- Mumbai's first eating house for sports freaks. Inside the restaurant, soccer enthusiasts feast on the restaurant's television sets -- three in all. And the atmosphere is electric. Jaideep Gandhi, the brain behind Sports Cafe hit upon the idea of turning the restaurant around eight months ago. First, he brought two stunning posters of tennis stars, Stefan Edberg and Ivan Lendl, straight out of his bedroom and put them up in the restaurant. A few more posters have been added since.

A pair of boxing gloves,a couple of cricket bats, a chess board and a basketball net lend authenticity to the theme. One wall has a replica of the soccer World Cup logo and now Gandhi is working on a miniature soccer field which will go up on another wall in the next few days.
