PIL filed on cyclone crisis

AHMEDABAD, June 18: Gujarat High Court on Thursday issued notice to the state government, the Kandla Port Trust chairman, and chief secretary, and Union Ministry of Surface Transport among others for not taking effective preventive measures when the fact that the cyclone was going to strike Kandla was known well in advance.Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice J M Panchal, acting on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Mahesh Ramniklal Domadia, a professor and a local journalist from Adipur-Kutch, issued the notice, returnable on June 30. Advocate Nimish Kapadia, appearing on behalf of the petitioner, urged the court to order a judicial inquiry for investigating and fixing responsibility for the avoidable loss to life and property. Kapadia further urged the court to initiate criminal proceedings against officers-employees responsible for losses as well as to initiate proceedings for imposing penalties including departmental inquires against them.
