MSU faculty gets a face-lift

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, June 18: For the first time in the past 50 years, the Faculty of Science, Maharaja Sayaji Rao University will welcome its new batch of students with a new look.

All repair work has been complete, names of election candidates on the walls have been removed, and the building wears a fresh paint.

The new look has been made possible with the contributions of the teaching and non-teaching staff donating their one-day salary for the repair work.Talking to Express Newsline, Dean of the Faculty of Science Bonny Pilo said, ``Government grants are not adequate enough to maintain the buildings and the laboratory equipment.''

He pointed out that though the university received grants from the University Grants Commission (UGC), the share received by each faculty was inadequate to meet the demands.

He said the repair work and the painting was a part of the face-lift exercise, which the university had planned as part of the golden jubilee celebrations. He said money was also being collected from the students in the form of developmental fee for carrying out various works.

Pilo observed that the faculty, apart from the maintenance of the building, also needed new laboratory equipment. The gas lines in the laboratory were in bad shape, Pilo said, adding they were also warned a number of times about the poor condition. He said the interiors of the faculty were maintained through repair work carried out at regular intervals, but it was the exteriors which needed attention.

He observed that once students were made to pay from their pockets for the developmental fees, they would hesitate in damaging property or from damaging walls during elections.
