69 kg gold haul at IGI airport

NEW DELHI, June 18: In one of the largest hauls of gold at the Indira Gandhi International Airport the officials of the Headquarters Preventive Branch (HPB), seized six hundred gold biscuits of 10 tolas each. The value of the haul which also included LCD display modules, watch parts, calculators and computer parts was estimated to be Rs 3.68 crore.

The gold biscuits had RNA markings and a purity mark of 9999. According to commissioner of customs, Vijay Zutshi, the officers of the HPB had gathered information that consignments from a particular consignor in Hongkong had arrived by an United Airlines flight UA 001 on the night of June 16 and 17.

Zutshi said that as the goods were likely to be removed clandestinely without filing of documents, the officers decided to examine them. Examination of one of the pallets showed that 1,66,000 liquid crystal modules numbering were found wrapped in polythene sheets covered with black adhesive tapes.

1,000 LCD modules were found concealed in another packet. 50 gold biscuits were also recovered from a packet that was in the same package. 11 more such packets were found.

Watch parts, calculators and computer parts were also recovered. While the biscuits weighing 69.9 kgs are valued at Rs 2.95 crore, the LCDs are worth Rs 41.5 lakh. According to customs officials investigations have revealed that a few similar consignments from the same consignor had been removed clandestinely in the recent past. No arrests have been made as yet.
