Western down Central to capture crown

MUMBAI, June 21: Western Railway defeated Central Railway 3-2, after a three-hour struggle, in the men's team final of the Central Revenue Invitational table tennis championship, organised by the Chief Commissioner of Central Excise (Mumbai), at the Khar Gymkhana yesterday.

Western were richer by Rs 7,500 and the runners-up received Rs 6,000.Results: Men's team (final): Western Railway bt Central Railway 3-2: (Nachiket Chawathe bt Rohit Choudary 24-22, 19-21, 21-9; lost to Bhusan S Thakur 21-23, 18-21; Kunal Solanki bt Ganadeep Bhiwandkar 22-20, 22-20; Rajesh Shelar lost to Bhusan S Thakur 21-16, 14-21, 16-21; bt Rohit Choudary 21-18, 21-13). Semi-finals: Central Railway bt Central Revenue 3-0: (Bhushan Singh Thakur bt Rahul Das 21-12, 21-23, 21-19; Rohit Choudary bt Sanjeev Mehra 21-18, 13-21, 21-10; Nilesh Vaid bt J Shrikande 21-17, 21-14). Western Railway bt RCF 3-1: (Kunal Solanki lost to Mahendra Chiplunkar 2-0-22, 12-21; Nachiket Chawathe bt Nilesh Pandirkar 21-17, 21-14; bt Mahendra Chiplunkar 22-20,21-18; Chiraj Channa bt Trilok Prabhune 21-18, 21-18).

CBI hold Air-India

Central Bank of India snatched a point off fancied Air-India by holding them to a 1-1 draw in WIFA-conducted Super Division football league at the Cooperage ground, today.

Valerian D'Souza gave the bankmen the lead in the 51st minute. T Khambiton Singh restored parity for Air-India in the 71st minute.

Other results: First Division: D'Assisi 6 (Sanjay Anand 2, Agnello Picardo 2, Noel D'Souza, Valerian Picardo) bt Naval Civilians 0. Young Boys 2 (Faran Ansari, Laique Ahmed) drew with Navi Mumbai 2 (Vijit Shetty, Usman Siddique).Second Division: Kalina 7 bt Goregaon 0.

Third Division: Ralf S C 1 (B Rajesh) drew with Shri Sainath 1 (Santosh Rane).

Borivli Rangers win

Down 0-2, Borivli Rangers rallied to down Marol Julius XI 7-2 in Group B of the MDFA-conducted Second Division football league at the St Xavier's ground, Parel, today.

Sushant Gurav (2), Amol K, Amit Patade, Pratik Nirkar (2) and Colin Mirandanetted for the winners. Adolf Vaz and Melwyn Rodrigues accounted for Marol.

In another match of the same competition, Vidya Vikasni (Ex-students) bt MLWB 2-0. E D'Cunha and Eugina A were the scorers.

Saraiya feted

Still going strong after completing 60, noted cricket commentator Suresh Saraiya was felicitated by former India cricket captain and manager Ajit Wadekar, yesterday, at the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Bhavan. The function was organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Kreeda Patrakar Sangathana to honour Saraiya on his 61st birthday.
