Conservative wins Colombian elections
AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
BOGOTA, June 22: Conservative Party candidate Andres Pastrana defeated ruling Liberal Party candidate Horacio Serpa in Colombia's presidential run-off election on Sunday, in what began as an extremely tight race but ended with a clear winner. With 95 per cent of the vote counted, Pastrana had garnered 50.65 per cent of the vote against Serpa's 46.23 per cent.Pastrana, the 44-year-old son of former Colombian president Misael Pastrana Borrero, made a brief statement thanking his supporters, promising to include women in his new administration and stating that there would be no political revenge against the losers of Sunday's vote. Pastrana will take office on August 7, replacing beleaguered Liberal Party President Ernesto Samper and putting an end to 12 years of Liberal control. ``The country clearly came out to vote for change,'' he told reporters.
