Chinese Govt issues passports to rebel's family
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BEIJING, June 22: China has issued passports to the parents of exiled Chinese dissident Wang Dan, permitting them to visit him at Harvard in the United States, media reports said today. The easy approval of the passports, which took less than a month, was attributed by the parents to the relaxed atmosphere prevailing in China before the visit of US President Bill Clinton. In normal courses, a passport is not easy to obtain in the country where the approval of a work unit has to be secured first. Wang's parents said the family had spent little time with their son in the past few years. Wang Dan served almost seven years in jail following the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident.
