CWC may discuss Govt formation
The Congress Working Committee meeting in Delhi today is likely to discuss the strategy on alternate government formation in the wake of pressure being brought upon by the secular parties, including the Left, to take over the reins of the government following rumblings in the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party-led coalition. The agenda of the CWC was virtually set by former prime minister Chandra Shekhar through an open call yesterday to dethrone the BJP government.
No final word on caste in Census
Inclusion of caste data in the upcoming Census 2001 will be a complex and imperfect exercise at best, the Census Commissioner and Registrar General of India has said. Emphasising that no final decision has been taken on the inclusion of caste data in the next census, the Census Commissioner M Vijayanunni said successive census commissioners have reiterated the difficulties of including caste data in the gigantic headcounting exercise.
India may insist on Dhaka proposal at Colombo
A year after India and Pakistan signed a communique in Islamabad identifying eight issues for negotiations, including Kashmir, the dialogue is stuck. So when Prime Ministers Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif meet on the sidelines of the SAARC summit in Colombo, scheduled from July 29-31, both sides will take the opportunity to review the impassioned differences that have kept them apart.
