Iran's win deflates a new US dream
In the end, all of Bill Clinton's advances and Madeleine Albright's overtures in the diplomatic arena did not bring the United States the victory it desperately needed against Iran on the soccer field. Watched by millions of neophytes -- hardly aficionados -- in homes and sports bars across the United States, the American soccer team found that the country being a superpower does not translate into victory.

Jiang presents "human" side of China
China has called for a "constructive strategic partnership" with the United States and emphasised the need to promote growth in Sino-American relations and understanding between the peoples of the two countries. In an apparent attempt to assuage critics of Clinton's visit to China, Jiang said Beijing intends to sign the Convention on Political and Civils Rights.

N Korea warns US against sanctions
North Korea on Monday warned the United States of "consequences" if Washington continued to delay the lifting of economic sanctions imposed against the communist state. The warning was issued one day before Washington and Pyongyang were to hold the first high-level military talks in seven years to defuse tension on one of the world's most tense borders.
