Italy ride on goals by Vieri and Baggio
Christian Vieri maintained his record of scoring in every match and Roberto Baggio scored a late goal as the `Deadly Duo' gave Italy a 2-1 win over Austria and a place in the World Cup second round today. Substitute Andreas Herzog scored a penalty for Austria in injury time but it came too late to save his side from elimination.

Cameroon draw
Chile and Cameroon played out a fast and furious 1-1 draw today in their final World Cup Group `B' match. Chile led from the 21st minute when midfielder Jose Sierra fired a magnificent left-footed free-kick over the Cameroon wall, and seemed assured of victory when the African nation had defender Rigobert Song sent off for his second bookable offence in the 52nd minute.

Match abandoned
Well, according to the cricket administrators and the statisticians `Rain Saved India.' What a joke! India had comprehensively outplayed New Zealand for the bulk of the 74.2 overs before the storm hit and yet if another four balls had been bowled the Kiwis would have received two points for a win.

Peter Shilton says
As a player I hated conceding goals and I still do now, I am sitting watching from the sidelines. Nothing annoys me more than sloppy defending or goalkeepers whose technique is more suited to the playground. Unfortunately there have been too many errors for my liking in the World Cup so far. Don't get me wrong. I love to see goals scored but only after some intricate approach play or from a brilliant strike.

England lose
Dan Petrescu brought England to their knees in the Stade Municipale last night with a last-minute goal after Michael Owen had appeared to have answered England's call with a dramatic equaliser to Viorel Moldovan's opening goal for Romania two minutes into the second half.

Tendulkar's record
Little champion Sachin Tendulkar today broke the 15-year old record of scoring maximum runs in a season held by former England captain David Gower, when he lofted a huge six over deep square leg and crossed 49 individual runs in the Independence Cup tie against New Zealand in Colombo.
