In the arms of nature

Ranjit Kumar
PUNE, June 23: It will be many years before I reach old age, but the very thought of it makes me marvel at the numerous wonderful things I would be able to do then. Will it be the way we see it on TV or the Internet - technology in full flourish - or maybe we'll have people visiting and staying on different planets. The possibilities are immense. But I would like to spend the final years of my life in the embrace of nature.

My first priority would be to buy a small cottage far away from the hustle and bustle of the polluted world. In order to be close to nature I would take up gardening as it is extremely close to my heart.

Sitting in my garden I'd like to feel the soft-blowing breeze swaying in the air. The leaves of the tree will dance to the tune of the wind while the chirping birds join in the chorus. The merry music of the trio will ring in the air and the refreshing scent of the pleasant morning dew will definitely be a breath of fresh air. Buzzing bees, drumming woodpeckers, wouldn't that be lilting music to my ageing ears? It definitely would be and coupled up with multi-coloured butterflies and sweet singing birds it would indeed be a sight to behold.

The melody of nature's sweet singing and subtle dancing will not only make me sing along with the serenading grasshoppers but also make me sway with the dancing breeze. Oh... the undiscovered mysteries of nature!

Nature is so infinite in its variety that I would undoubtedly like to spend my old age growing various exotic plants and spending the rest of my days in the abode of nature. Wouldn't it be lovely to nurture a small shoot which gradually blossoms into a sturdy plant? The plant then has blooming flowers and before you know it that plant becomes a part of your life. My garden will definitely contain exotic wild thorny flowers along with petite delicate flowers. The flowers will grow slowly and steadily and after a patient wait will bloom in all their grace and beauty.

The sunflowers' small little buds bloom into mature flowers with petals that shine like the golden sunrays. The roses bloom with a bright colour and the crocuses develop into ravishing multi-coloured flowers. My flowers would look just like a magnificent Picasso painting with colourful brush strokes in full flourish. Oh! I can picture everything so clearly.

Apart from being close to nature I would also like to be close to children. I would not only like to share my knowledge and wisdom with the future generation but also my love and respect for nature. It's really a wonderful thing that so much knowledge can be not only shared but also appreciated by children. It would be nice to tell them stories, share experiences, go for adventures and picnics.

It would really make one feel young watching the children dance in the falling rain. The pitter-patter of the raindrops on my window panes will sound like the drumming of a drummer boy. It would truly be a great experience to help children in making small paper boats and then floating them on muddy puddles. A little love and knowledge can certainly do a world of good in broadening a child's perspectives and views. Of course being with children is a learning experience and everyone gets to have a helluva good time.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I'd like to laugh and be merry, or laughter as they say is the music of the soul. It is on the strains of this music that I would wish to go quietly into the night.
