Stepping into the millennium

Ankit Pogula
PUNE, June 23: As time passes, it is a natural tendency of every human being to look back and see where he stands and how far he has come from the point he started. Moving into the 21st century, every Indian with this same tendency must be looking back.

Comparisons can be made very easily between what India was in the earlier half of the century and what it is today. Contrasting figures and characters are visible even to a layman.

But what has been the most alarming difference is the drastic change in the leadership and attitude of the people of India.

The earlier part of this century comprised of leaders with unmatchable calibre and potential and characters beyond description. They always dreamed of a great, strong and young nation. They visualised an India, important and significant to the world. The people were different, completely selflessness and committed to the well-being of the people. So great were the people of India during that period that God fell in love with them and brought the best near him in heaven leaving us in an orphaned state.

Since then the people of India have been on the lookout of for a leader who can match the greatness of India, to utilise and channelise the youth and resources of this country to optimum use. Till today this lookout is on, with the dissolution of the parliament, mid-term elections, double digit coalition governments being the routine.

When the government which is responsible for upliftment of every individual fails to do so, the individual has no choice but to pull himself by hook or crook to the level of recognition and acceptance that reflects the state of the country. But like so many Indians I remain optimistic and will enter the 21st century with this prayer on my lips -
``Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.....Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, Let my country awake''.
