SURAT, June 23: The Rander police have registered a case of harassment, threatening to murder and subjecting a married woman to physical and mental torture against seven people, in a dowry related case, on Tuesday. While the police have not made any arrests as yet, interrogations of the accused has been initiated.THE complainant, a resident of Palanpur Patia area in the city, complained to the Rander police on Tuesday afternoon that her husband, his brother and wife, his parents and two other family members beat her up regularly and threatened to kill her between September 1994 and June 1998.
According to the complainant, she was married in 1994 and her family had given Rs 1.10 lakh in cash, gold and silver ornaments, a motorcycle, a double bed, a colour television, a refrigerator, a wrist watch and other valuables as dowry.
But, barely three months after her marriage, her in-laws started demanding for an additional Rs 2 lakh in cash, which the complainant's family did not give, she said, adding that since then she was being subjected to all sorts of atrocities by her husband and his family members.
Rander PSI B M Desai, investigating the case, said that a case under IPC 498 (a), 506, 323, and 114 of the IPC -- was registered against the seven accused after a written application was given to the police commissioner this morning.
