India outplay New Zealand, but rain is the winner
Well, according to the cricket administrators and the statisticians `Rain saved India.' What a joke! India had comprehensively outplayed New Zealand for the bulk of the 74.2 overs before the storm hit. Yet if another four balls had been bowled the Kiwis would have received two points for a win.

Vieri, Baggio wrap it up for Italy
Christian Vieri maintained his record of scoring in every match and Roberto Baggio scored a late goal to give Italy a 2-1 win over Austria and a place in the World Cup second round yesterday. Substitute Andreas Herzog scored a penalty for Austria in injury time but it came too late to save his side from elimination.

Hingis, Novotna weather rain and rivals
Defending champion Martina Hingis weathered the valiant challenge of American Lisa Raymond. On the other hand, twice runner-up Jana Novotna made short work of her lowly-ranked Czech rival on a rain-affected second day at Wimbledon.
