Gujarat Congress to move no-trust motion

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
AHMEDABAD, June 25: The Congress will move a no-confidence motion against the four-month-old Bharatiya Janata Party ministry led by Keshubhai Patel in Gujarat, when the state Assembly begins its budget session on June 29.Disclosing this at a press conference here today, leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Amarsinh Chaudhary, said the Rashtriya Janata Party would also support the motion.

Chaudhary said the party would take up the issues of law and order situation in the state and also edible oil prices, during the session on cyclone devastation. The Congress leader went on to accuse the Government of not having taken proper relief measures after the cyclone hit the Saurashtra coast. He, however, supported the Chief Minister's demand for appointing a commission to look into allegations of Government failure to take adequate precautionary measures before the cyclone.

He said that a retired judge of the Supreme Court should be a member of the commission.Chaudhary, who has visited cyclone affected areasof the coastal districts of Kutch, Jamangar and Porbandar, claimed that the toll could be more than 10,000. Since the Government had prior information of the cyclone, timely action could have saved 90 per cent of the lives, he said, adding that the Government could not escape its responsibility by holding the Kandla Port Trust responsible for the situation.

About the hike in groundnut oil prices, Chaudhary said that the Government had failed to check the price rise. Besides, due to the `wrong' policy of the state government, the benefits went to oil millers and not to farmers, he added.

Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president C D Patel said the party had submitted a detailed letter to the Government demanding re-survey of the cyclone-affected areas and added that the salt workers -- who had borne the brunt of the cyclone -- should be allowed to settle on free trade zone land.
