Mexico claw back

ST ETIENNE: Mexico clawed back a 2-2 draw with a last gasp goal from Luis Hernandez against the Netherlands today to make sure of qualification from World Cup Group E.

  • The result confirmed the Dutch as group winners with Mexico as the second placed team. South Korea, already out of the World Cup, took Belgium with them after a 1-1 draw at the Parc Des Princes.

  • Paraguay qualified for the second round after a 20-metre shot from striker Miguel Benitez set them on the way to 3-1 win over Nigeria in the teams' final Group D game last night.

  • Spain thrashed Bulgaria 6-1, but it was too late to save them from going out of the tournament. Paraguay's surprise win meant Spain could not qualify for the second round while Bulgaria, semi-finalists in 1994, were also eliminated.
