Infuriated mob sets TSR on fire
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, June 25: A mob of about 250 people rampaged through Seemapuri last night, setting a TSR on fire, damaging buses and a PCR van. The police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to bring the situation under control. The incident occurred after a cyclist -- 18-year-old Ashok Kumar, a resident of Karawal Nagar -- was knocked down by a speeding TSR (DL1R A 8631) between the Shastri park red light and the area of Pehla Pushta. However, the TSR driver fled the area. Crowd gathered and set the TSR on fire. The mob then went out of control and started pelting stones at DTC buses, damaging six of them, and breaking their window panes. The crowd did not disperse even when a PCR van arrived at the spot. Instead they attacked the PCR van itself, smashing its window panes. The police did manage to remove the victim to the GTB Hospital where he was declared dead. Finally the staff of four PCR vans along with the local police arrived and managed to control the mob within an hour. Cases of accident, rioting and causing damage to public property hasbeen registered and nine persons arrested. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
