Brazilians brace for the "Sa-Za" factor

Brian Homewood
PARIS, June 26: The much-vaunted Chilean strike partnership of Ivan Zamorano and Marcelo Salas pits itself tomorrow against Ronaldo's mighty Brazil, whose pride has been wounded by World Cup defeat against Norway.

Brazil, mindful of their shortcomings against Norway, are planning to return to their original line-up for the clash against their old rivals.

Brazilian supporters will be hoping their back-line can cope with the Sa-Za partnership and that Ronaldo can add to his disappointing tally of one goal so far in the competiton.

World champions Brazil are favourites to go through, while Chile will look for inspiration to 1987 -- a year they knocked Brazil out of the Copa America with an historic 4-0 defeat.

Attacking mid-fielder Denilson, who replaced him, will move back to the substitute's bench while Aldair, who missed the Norway game to avoid the risk of him picking up a second yellow card, will also be back to partner Junior Baiano in defence.

The Chileans have to replace three suspended playersafter right-back Moises Villaroel, left-back Francisco Rojas and defensive mid-fielder Nelson Parreguez all picked up second yellow cards against Cameroon.

Away from home at Parc des Princes there is little chance of the match suffering from the bad tempered clashes that have marred previous encounters between the countries at both club and international level.

The most notorious was the 1989 World Cup qualifier at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, when the Chilean team walked off in the second half after a firecracker thrown from the crowd landed near goalkeeper Roberto Rojas.

Fifa later judged that Rojas, now on the coaching staff at Brazilian club Sao aulo, had feigned injury, banning him for life and Chile from the 1994 World Cup qualifying competition.
