Navy to get frigates from Russia
The Indian Navy will be acquiring three Project 1135 modified Krivak III frigates from Russia over the next four years -- a major boost to the Navy's surface fleet. Construction will begin at a Russian shipyard by the end of the year and the first ship will join the Indian Navy by around 2002. The two other ships are to be subsequently inducted in one year intervals.

To beat sanctions, indigenise, urge men behind Pokharan II
Inspired by the joint effort that went into making the recent nuclear tests at Pokharan a thundering success, India's top scientists feel that synergy is the best bet to defeat the spectre of US sanctions. Speaking at a function jointly organised by the South Indian Education Society (SIES) and The Indian Express Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr R Chidambaram said, "I considered sanctions as a challenge for Indian science and technology...it will prompt more efforts towards indigenisation."

Draft rent bill to be tabled before Assembly during monsoon session
The final draft of the new legislation to replace the Bombay Rent Act, 1947, has been prepared by the 12-member Joint Select Committee constituted by the State Government. The joint committee finalised the draft rent bill at a meeting held at Ratnagiri district on June 24, 1998.
