US, China agree to detarget nuclear missiles
The United States and China yesterday agreed to `detarget' missiles aimed at each other and also jointly pledged not to export to India or Pakistan missiles, missile equipment or materials capable of delivering nuclear weapons. The agreement on missile export, however, covers only medium and long-range missiles, according to the joint statement finalised in private meetings between US President Bill Clinton and Chinese President Jiang Zemin in the Great Hall of the People.

Pakistan liberals begin movement to lobby for peace with India
Pakistani peaceniks have a wish list: their government should normalise relations with India, both countries should give up the option of war and shelve plans to acquire nuclear arsenals. Too much danger is involved, believe peace lobbyists, who worry about unstable, jittery governments on either side, the chronically tense border situation, fuzzy command and control chains and refusal to take seriously the terrible responsibility of possessing nuclear weapons.

Tripp to emerge from shadows
The woman who entangled ex-White House intern Monica Lewinsky in a sex scandal that threatens to topple President Bill Clinton is set to emerge from the shadows. On Tuesday, special prosecutor Kenneth Starr will begin his questioning of Linda Tripp, Lewinsky's `friend' who secretly taped conversations with her. Tripp's long-awaited grand jury testimony about the scandal that came to light when she brought her audio tapes to Starr in January is expected to last several days, but could be stretched over several weeks.
