Pakistan scientist says government discussed pre-emptive nuke attack on India
A Pakistani nuclear scientist who is hiding in Europe has reported that he was asked by his country's military commanders for information which would have enabled them to order pre-emptive strikes against India. Further, scientists on Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme were asked to provide data for the explosive yields and weaponisation necessary to attack a variety of Indian military targets.

Quake kills 108 in Turkey
An earthquake that rattled Adana (Turkey) has killed at least 108 people and injured about 1,000. Among those killed yesterday were 37 people who lived in the slums of Adana, a city of one million, according to Deputy Governor Ardahan Totuk. At least 30 people were reported dead in the nearby town of Ceyhan, the site of an oil terminal.

Albright goes ballistic, dismisses India's protests
United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright yesterday brushed off Indian criticism of a Sino-American statement on South Asian security and said Beijing had moved forward in pledging to halt missile cooperation with Pakistan. Albright accused the Indians of acting as if an international call for a halt to nuclear testing "doesn't apply to them, that everybody is out of step with them."
