Hawkers to step up agitation

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, June 29: Hawkers have decided to step up the heat on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which recently embarked on an anti-hawker drive disallowing hawkers from carrying out their business within 250 metres of railway stations.

Municipal Mazdoor Union leader Sharad Rao announced at a press conference that the hawkers would march to Mayor Nandu Satam's residence at Dadar at 5 pm on Tuesday. This is to be followed by rasta and railway rokos. Trucks bringing vegetables and fruits into the city would be stopped on the highways, he informed. The MMU is also organising a hawkers' conference on July 16, to be attended by hawkers from all over the state. And on July 21, they will participate in a demonstration outside the police commissioner's office and the legislative assembly.
