SURAT, June 29:No untoward incident was reported during the day hours on Monday as curfew was relaxed for a further two hours in Bardoli town, which witnessed communal clashes last week.However, late last night, a closed-up house belonging to a member of the minority community was torched in HUDCO Society and a larri, also belonging to a member of the minority community, was set afire. Stone-throwing was also reported from Bhandariwad around midnight on Sunday. Each community has blamed the other for the incident, which reportedly threatened to assume alarming proportions.
Surat Range IG O P Mathur and District Superintendent of Police Bhavsinh Vaghela have been camping in the city ever since violence erupted on Thursday, while Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president C D Patel visited the town on Monday evening.
District Collector R M Shah on Sunday evening constituted a peace committee to maintain an atmosphere of amity between the two communities.
The committee has 26 members, 13 of each community. Shah threatened to take stern action against persons found disturbing the atmosphere.
The committee will meet every Monday in the presence of the taluka mamlatdar and an inspector of Bardoli Police Station. The meeting decided to invite members of the other community to one's religious festivals.
Former MLA Pravinbhai Rathod, taluka panchayat vice-president Sureshbhai Patel, Nagarpalika president Trushnaben Pandya, Bhagwatibhai Parekh, Gautam Desai, Hirabhai Shah, Yusuf Ali and Harunbhai Patel were among those who attended the meeting.
