AHMEDABAD, July 3: The Gujarat government and Reliance Petroleum Limited were issued notices by the Gujarat high court today.Acting chief justice K G Balkrishnan and Justice J M Panchal issued the notice after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by Jansangarsh Manch seeking constitution of a high-level committee to inquire into the deaths of migrant labourers working with Reliance Industry Limited (RIL) refinery during the recent cyclone in the state.
The petitioner submitted that the State Government and Reliance Petroleum management failed to act on time even when it was known through forecast that the cyclone was slated to hit Jamnagar (where the Reliance refinery is located) and other parts of coastal Gujarat.
It submitted that RIL did not allow the government authorities to verify how many persons (including migrant labourers) were killed or injured in the cyclone, which hit its premises in Jamnagar. It asked the court to direct the company and the State Government to file a completereport regarding this before the high court.
