Annan won't be present when PM meets Sharif
Nirupama Subramanian
COLOMBO, July 4: A Foreign office spokesman on Saturday said there was no information here that United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan would be present in Sri Lanka when the Indian and Pakistani prime ministers hold a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming SAARC summit.``I am not aware of any such thing,'' the spokesman said, reacting to a report in a Pakistani newspaper that Annan would ``show up'' here during the summit as an expression of his interest in defusing the tensions between India and Pakistan. The summit is scheduled from July 29 to 31, and Atal Behari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif are expected to hold bilateral talks on its sidelines. India has indicated it would not like the UN to play any role in attempts to clear the air between the two countries. In another development, UN special envoy Alvaro de Soto met foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar this week. ``Mr de Soto briefed him on the steps taken by the Secretary-General to reduce tensions and encourage a dialogue betweenIndia and Pakistan following the nuclear tests. He also briefed the foreign minister on the discussions he had with the prime ministers of Bangladesh and Pakistan,'' a foreign ministry press release stated.
