SURAT, July 9: Two Persons carrying ganja and arrested by the Surat Railway police as they alighted from the Ahmedabad-bound Navjivan Express were produced before a magistrate and granted a three-day police remand. Sixteen kgs of ganja, worth over Rs 16,000 was seized from the two, the railway police said.According to the Railway Police inspector S L Bhatt, who is investigating the case, the movements of the accused Sammaiya Madigalam and Minmaa Padamshali, both residents of Warrangal district in Andhra Pradesh, were highly suspicious after they got off the train (6046 UP) at Surat on Wednesday evening, which led to their arrest. And it was on Wednesday night that the experts concluded that the substance seized from both the accused was ganja, the police added.
Interrogations of the two have revealed that the ganja seized was grown in their own fields and that they had come to the city to work in the textile units in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporations surrounding the city. The two claimed that they had brought the narcotics for personal consumption, the police added.
Meanwhile, the chief of the railway police, who visited the city on Thursday, asked the local railway police to ensure that crimes aboard trains and in the vicinity of railway stations, which has increased of late, be curbed.
