Tilak award for Chidambaram

PUNE, July 9: Dr Rajgopal Chidambaram, renowned scientist and Chairperson of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), is to be conferred with this year's Tilak award at a ceremony to be held on August 1, 1998. The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a gold medal and a citation would be presented to Dr Chidambaram by Union Home Minister L K Advani. This was declared by Jayantrao Tilak, former chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and chief trustee of the Tilak Memorial Trust, at a press conference held this morning.

Chidambaram was born in Chennai on December 12, 1936. He started his career at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1962 and went on to become its director in 1990. He was also advisor to the International Nuclear Research Agency and has been an internationally renowned researcher in high pressures.
