Gujarat's chemical factory workers get holes in their nasal walls
He takes out a green file-string from his pocket, casually puts one end into his right nostril and draws it out from the other. Radheshyam Kahar is not a magician. Neither are 42 others like him. They have "nasal septum perforations", or simply stated, holes in the nasal wall, splitting the nostrils. They all work at Gujarat's only basic chromium sulphate factory, Hema Chemicals, which employs over 250 workers.

Postal stir hits services
Postal services across the country were paralysed with the strike by postal services employees near-complete on day one. Apart from mail getting completely disrupted, few post offices accepted money orders, insured packages, speedpost or registered letters.

Gujarat Government passes confidence test
The BJP government in Gujarat, headed by Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel, passed its first trial of strength in the Assembly yesterday when the House rejected a no-confidence motion, with 117 members voting against it and 54 for. The motion was put to vote by Speaker Dhirubhai Shah when Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Mehta insisted on a division, although there was never any doubt about the ruling party's strength.

Kissa kursi ka -- Congress wins bout
The BJP "surrendered" to the Congress yesterday to put an end to the "kissa kursi ka" in the Lok Sabha. The scramble for the coveted front seats had been on since the last session, resulting in a free-for-all in the House. The Government was forced to settle the matter one way or another because voting on the Budget is scheduled next week, for which seat numbers are a must.
