Phagwara: The state unit of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Punjab has strongly condemned the demand of the Rashtriya Janata Dal for Muslim Women Reservation Bill. Talking to media persons here today, unit president Tarun Chugh described this demand as communal and provocative.He also condemned the threat given by a terrorist outfit to ban Amarnath Yatra and urged the Jammu and Kashmir Government to make adequate security arrangements for the pilgrims. Chugh said a state-level meeting of the Morcha would be held on July 22 at Mansa.

Crime
Phagwara: Thieves decamped with Rs 70 lakh, gold ornaments weighing about 40 tolas and other valuables in broad daylight, from the house of a leading exporter of the town. Police have registered a case.

Mishap
Phagwara: One person was killed on the spot and five injured when a jeep dashed against a tree near Phillaur yesterday, police said. All the injured were admitted to Phillaur Civil Hospital.

Inaugurated
Roopnagar: A water supply scheme sponsored by the Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd was inaugurated at Daburji village near here. According to an official release, DC Kulbir Singh Sidhu inaugurated the scheme with a project cost of Rs 7.50 lakh.

Meet
Amritsar: Inder Pal Singh, an eminent educationist and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University has been invited to present a paper at the International Conference of World Council of Curriculum Instructions at Bangkok. His paper is entitled University Education in India - For What Purpose: A perspective from the developing country.

Patiala: While welcoming the appointment of Amarinder Singh as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, the District Congress Committee (Rural) here has decided to send party workers in large numbers to Chandigarh when Amarinder Singh goes to take charge of his new assignment on Sunday. According to the president of the unit, Lal Singh, former minister this decision has been taken in a special meeting of the unit held here yesterday.

Extended
Chandigarh: The Haryana government has extended the term of appointment of State Swatantrata Sainik Samman Samiti chairman Ram Singh Jakhar for one year more - up to July 18, 1999, it was officially stated on Friday. The government has also extended the term of appointment of Samiti vice-chairman Banu Ram Gupta for one year - up to August 15, 1999.

Terminated
Sirsa: The services of Gurmeet Kaur Chahal, Inderjit and Manju Sharma - all leaders of Nursing Association Sirsa Civil Hospital, have been terminated with immediate effect. According to sources, the hospital authorities got a fax message to this effect from the directorate and the concerned nurses reportedly refused to receive the orders. Consequently, the authorities pasted the termination orders on the gates of their residences.

Appointed
Patiala: Remal Dass, took over as finance officer of the Punjabi University, here today. Prior to this appointment, Dass was working as deputy registrar. He joined Punjabi University in 1962. A gold medalist in law with a post graduate degree, Sass has the distinction of having worked in most of the branches of the university during his tenure as superintendent, assistant registrar and deputy registrar.

Benefit
Nawanshahr: About 5 lakh persons in Punjab would be given old-age pension benefits for which a sum of Rs 120 crore has already been earmarked, revealed R.L. Kalsia, director, social security, women and children welfare Punjab, at a meeting convened to review the progress of the old-age pension scheme in the district.According to a press release, Kalsia said that up till March 31, 1998 nearly 3.44 lakh persons had been brought under the scheme and a sum of Rs 30 crore had been released for payment under the scheme up to June 30.

Camp
Kharar: A free yoga camp organised by the local Rotary Club concluded at the Arya Kanya Vidhalya here this morning.A national-level yoga expert couple M.P. Prajapati and his wife Heena Prajapati imparted yoga training to the local residents, including women and children, who attended the camp.The president of the club, J.P. Dhiman, said that the camp was inauguarated on July 4.
