Reshuffle a warning to underworld, say police

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, July 12: The latest reshuffle among the police top brass is expected to bring back the shine it had lost after the underworld had notched the highest number of killings in a period of seven months.

Three transfers are being seen as important from the point of view of putting a check on the gangsters are on a killing spree. D Shivanandan taking over the reins at the Crime Branch as the joint commissioner of police (crime), Param Bir Singh as the deputy commissioner of police, Special Operation Squad (SOS) in the headquarters and Y C Pawar as the additional commissioner of police (crime) in the north-east.

In the recent months, Singh has proved to be the most dynamic police officer in the city. When he headed the police force in the Zone-VI, Singh and his team gave a body blow to the Chhota Rajan gang. Later, he was transferred to Zone-II to reign in the Arun Gawli gang which had started flexing its muscle. Singh stormed into the Gawli's headquarters in Dagdi Chawl and was able to clips the wings ofgang.

The DCP (SOS), heading the team of specially trained commandoes, is a new post. "No other officer in the city can do the job in a way Param (Singh) can. He is an expert to dhoom dhadam," said a top-level officer in the police headquarter. Pawar known for his unconventional policing methods is expected to upset the underworld's applecart in the north-east.
